Ask Mischo Beauty...

This week's question comes from my sister, Allison, who asked the following:

"What's your favorite facial mask and why?"

In all honesty, I've had the opportunity to use a variety of facial masks that have worked well for me (I have combination skin), and what's really most important when selecting a mask is knowing your skin type. Generally, there are two types of masks - setting masks and non-setting masks. Setting masks, which normally use clay as their base - harden, dry, absorb oil and remove dead skin cells. They're recommended for oily, combination and acneic skin types.

Non-setting masks should be used on normal, dry or sensitive skin and are primarily nourishing, hydrating and soothing. An example of a non-setting mask would be a gel mask. Benefits of masks include some of the following:

- Tighten and tone the skin
- Draw impurities out of the pores
- Assist in clearing of blemishes
- Hydrate & nourish the skin
- Calm & soothe the skin

And to further answer your question - know that I'm not brand loyal and that I personally use a combination of both mask types. I use a setting mask on my oily t-zone and a non-setting mask everywhere else. So there you have it!

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you choose to move forward, as well as what works for you. Love your skin.

Mischo Beauty School: Facial Masks 101

As a follow-up to the question I answered earlier this week on mask types, I thought I'd repost this lesson on masks. A great mask can do wonders for the skin. Masks are designed as an intensive treatment for different skin needs/issues. Generally, there are two types of masks: setting masks and non-setting masks.

Setting masks, which normally use clay as their base, harden and dry and absorb oil and remove dead skin cells. Non-setting masks are for dry or sensitive skin and are primarily moisturizing and soothing. Benefits of masks include the following:

1. Tighten and tone the skin
2. Draw impurities out of the pores
3. Clear up blemishes
4. Hydrate
5. Nourish
6. Calm and soothe
7. Rejuvenate the skin

Now that the weather is seriously cold and dry (at least in the midwest and east coast), consider investing in a non-setting mask (if it works for your skin type) which will keep your skin nourished and hydrated throughout the winter season! Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions. Love your skin.

This week's question comes from a reader, who asked the following:

"I just wanted to know if you have any suggestions on what I can do about the dark spots on my face. How can I get rid of them without a chemical peel?"

I could recommend a variety of products to treat your dark spots - called hyperpigmentation, but we really need to get to the bottom of WHY it's happening in the FIRST place! Do you follow a skincare regimen? Have you been consistent with your skincare regimen? Are you using the correct products for your skin type? Is something internal causing the dark spots? Are you allergic to certain ingredients in the products you're using? Do you have sensitive skin?

Ask yourself those questions and be honest with your answers! I'd also recommend a visit to the Dermatologist before you spend money on products! What works for one person, may not necessarily work for you. Your doctor should be able to help you get to the bottom of why this is happening, as well as give you proper direction on how to prevent it. I believe in prevention- first and foremost!

Once you've seen a Dermatologist and have been properly advised, I'd recommend that you start following a consistent skincare regimen using products specifically for your skin type/conditions. And, if you're able to- start investing in monthly facials! As I'm sure you've read on my blog, I BELIEVE in facials for so many beneficial reasons!

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward!

This week's question comes from a reader, who asked the following:

"So I heard that if you're in a crunch and have run out of facial cleanser you can use extra virgin olive oil as a facial cleanser. Is this true? I would think that using an oil to cleanse your face could potentially clog your pores but I am aware of the moisturizing qualities of extra virgin olive oil as well..."

While I don't use this method, I have heard that others love it and swear by it. I think the key is knowing your skin type and skin conditions and using products specifically formulated for it. So if extra virgin olive oil works for you, then use it. And, if you don't have a consistent skincare regimen, there's no better time than now to get started.

Now with that said , the most important step in a skincare regimen, in my opinion, is cleansing. It really is the foundation for healthy skin because it removes makeup, dirt, oil and dead skin cells. And again, my best suggestion is to cleanse your skin with a cleanser specifically formulated for your skin type and skin conditions both morning and night- and be sure to continue on with the remainder of your skincare regimen.

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward! And as always, please feel free to send me any additional questions you might have. Love your skin.

This week's question comes from a reader, who asked the following:

"I have thin hair and when it gets wet it will get VERY curly, is there a product that can loosen my curls? Maybe like a relaxer?"

Well, a relaxer will straighten your hair permanently, so you'll want to stay away from it. But, a texturizer (which is just the mildest form of a relaxer) will loosen your curl pattern - if applied correctly. But, before rushing out for a texturizer, I'd recommend that you try the following curl enhancing products which are recommended for curly hair types:

- Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer
- Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding
- Frederic Fekkai Luscious Curls Cream
- Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream
- Redken Ringlet 07

Now I don't have curly hair, so my recommendations are from those I know who do and who basically swear by the products listed above! I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward! And as always, please feel free to send me any additional questions you might have. Love your skin.

This week's question comes from Monica, who asked the following:

"After reading your blog for over a year now, I've finally made the decision to invest in a serious skincare regimen. But, there are so many steps and products to buy! Do I really need to purchase a toner?"

Thank you so much for your support! I really, really appreciate it! Now I'm biased (I'm a licensed esthetician), so yes, I do recommend you purchase one and here's why. I believe that toners are a necessary step in a skincare regimen. And just to clarify - toners, fresheners and astringents are all essentially the same type of product. But, it is important to note that the products do have different properties and vary by strength and alcohol content.

Most often these liquids are used after cleansing, just before a moisturizer is applied. If using during a mini-facial, for instance, then multiple applications are required. Toners are applied by using a cotton ball/pad or by spraying directly onto the skin. Most fall into the following categories below:

- Fresheners: Beneficial for dry, mature and sensitive skin. Often have the lowest to no alcohol content.

- Toners: Beneficial for normal and combination skin. Very low alcohol content; tones or tightens the skin.

- Astringents: Beneficial for oily and acneic skin. Higher alcohol content; helps remove excess oil on the skin, but can be too drying and may cause more harm than good.

So, here are the benefits:

- Removes residue left behind by cleansers.
- Restores the skin's natural pH after cleansing or other treatments.
- Prepares the skin for increased product absorption.
- May improve certain skin conditions (some toners contain
vitamins/antioxidants, etc.).

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward! And as always, please feel free to send me any additional questions you might have. Love your skin.

This week's question comes from a dear Spelmanite, who asked the following:

"Burned my cheeks exfoliating. Feels like sunburn. Any suggestions?"

I hate to hear that that has happened to you. While I am pro-exfoliation because of it's many benefits, I do believe in the "less is more rule". And so over-exfoliation or too-much exfoliation will definitely irritate the skin and could cause premature aging.

As a licensed esthetician, my recommendation is to make sure you're using the correct exfoliation product for your particular skin type. Physical/mechanical exfoliants (scrubs, beads, etc.) may be too rough for certain skin types - so be careful and follow the manufacturer's directions on correct product usage.

To treat your irritated/inflamed skin, try using products formulated for sensitive skin. Be very gentle with product application and removal. Also, try using a gel mask which will both calm and soothe your skin, along with providing hydration and nourishment.

If the condition persists- please see a dermatologist! I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward!

This week's question comes from Rachel, who asked the following:

"First, LOVE your blog- secondly, I need your help! I wear my hair straight during the winter (curly during the summer), because it's just easier to care for. With wearing my hair straight, I both blow dry and flat iron so I'm in need of a serious heat protectant! Any suggestions?"

Thank you- and yes, absolutely! I'm glad you've realized that you do NEED a heat protectant, because by the time summer arrives and you begin wearing your hair curly again, your hair will show signs of damage (depending on how often you heat style your hair)! My advice is that you heat style no more than once, maybe twice a week - if possible.

Now, you didn't share your hair type or texture, so my recommendation will include heat protectants that work for a variety of hair types. Please keep in mind that you will need to do research on each to determine which will work best for you. So here are my recommendations:

- Aveda Brillant Damage Control
- Mizani ThermaStrength Strengthening Style Serum
- Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray
- Silk Elements MegaSilk Heat Protection Spray
- Sebastian Trilliant
- Biolage Thermal-Activating Spray
- John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Hair Serum
- Kerastase Nectar Thermique
- Biosilk Silk Therapy
- Paul Mitchell Seal and Shine

And yes, there are many more, but I've listed those I've used and liked - or those I've received great feedback on... oh, and I'm not brand loyal.

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward!

This week's question comes from a reader, who asked the following:

"Can you please recommend a blow dryer for natural, curly African-American hair?"

There are so many great hair dryers on the market right now, which work for ALL hair types, so it's hard to recommend just one (in addition to the fact that I'm not brand loyal!). But, before I get into recommendations, I just want to reiterate the fact that after completing cosmetology school, I stopped defining hair by one's race. Instead, I like to describe hair in terms of texture and hair type.

Now, most of the best hair dryers are manufactured with the "Tourmaline Ion" technology which does the following:

- Cuts drying time in half
- Reduces frizz, adds shine
- Allows for consistent/even heat temperatures

And the list of "pros" goes on and on, depending on the brand, make and model of the hair dryer. If you're working with a thick head of coarse hair, then you'll want to especially make sure the dryer comes with a comb attachment or be sure to purchase one from a beauty supply store. A comb attachment will speed up the process, while allowing for greater control of your hair and less time spent on further straightening needed with a flat iron.

So a few of my favorites include:

- SuperSolanoX Professional Xtreme Hair Dryer
- CHI Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer
- T3 Featherweight Hair Dryer

Also, just a reminder, be sure to use a moisturizing leave-in conditioner AND a heat protectant as part of your haircare regimen before blow-drying.

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you decide to move forward!

This week's question comes from a reader, who asked the following:

"Thank you for the beauty tips you post on your page! They are incredibly helpful. I do have a question about facial skin care. My face, due to hormonal changes, broke out really badly some years ago and has left me with blemishes/dark marks on my cheeks (in fact when my face breaks out now it usually leaves a mark). What would you recommend to correct this? I'm not sure if I should see someone about facials, go to a dermatologist, or use an OTC fade cream? Thanks a million!"

You're very welcome! Now I could recommend a variety of products to treat hyperpigmentation, but it bothers me that your skin instantly leaves marks now after a breakout. You really need to get to the bottom of WHY that is happening in the FIRST place! Is it something internal? Are you using the wrong products? Are you allergic to certain ingredients? Is your skin super sensitive now?

I'd recommend a visit to the Dermatologist before you spend more money on products!

This week's question comes from Ashley, who asked the following:

"I'm in desperate need of an eye cream! I currently use products by Dermalogica and SkinCeuticals. I'm tired of walking around with dark bags under my eyes, looking like a tired, old woman. Help!"

Well, first and foremost, we need to figure out why you have dark circles/bags under your eyes to begin with! The cause could be a number of reasons such as - lack of sleep, stress, poor diet or allergies- just to name a few. There could be something you change internally, that could very well solve the problem.

Now when it comes to product recommendations, I'm not brand loyal. I am happy to hear that you've found products that work for you and because that's the case, I would encourage you to try an eye cream within those product lines first. The reason being, is that products within a line are specifically formulated to work with one another- so start there first! And, it is true that not every product within a product line will work for you.

If you have to search for an eye cream outside of the product lines you're currently using, then my advice is to buy products formulated for your specific skin type/need/issue. So, search for an eye cream formulated to target dark circles under the eyes. Also, please keep in mind that finding what works for you involves trial and error, and CONSISTENT use for a minimum of 30 days (in my opinion).

Remember, for best results, eye creams should be applied to cleansed skin both morning and night using your ring finger before applying other products. The skin under the eye area is the thinnest skin on the body, which means you should use your weakest finger (ring finger) to apply product to that delicate area. I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how it's going!

This week's question comes from a reader (who asked to remain anonymous), wanting to know the following:

"Any suggestions on how to get rid of or reduce ingrown hairs after a bikini wax?"

My best advice is to make sure you're exfoliating consistently in between waxing appointments! A few days before your appointment, lightly exfoliate which will in turn make hair easier to adhere to the wax. Resume exfoliation about 3 days after waxing to ensure the removal of dead skin cells, which, if not removed, could cause the hair to grow inward resulting in ingrown hairs. Here are a few products which help prevent ingrown hairs:

- Whish Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum
- BLISS Ingrown Eliminating Pads
- Tend Skin

For best results, always read and follow the manufacturer's directions on use! Also, DO NOT shave in between waxing appointments. Ideally, you'd like your hair growing on the same hair growth cycle to ensure an even length throughout and therefore a thorough waxing. I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how it's going!

This week's question comes from Megan, who asked the following:

"I was wondering if you could recommend a really great conditioner for dry & relaxed hair. Price is not a factor. Thanks so much & enjoy the New Year!"

Selecting a conditioner depends on the texture and condition of your hair. And, also it's important to keep in mind that conditioners fall into three categories- instant conditioners, hydrating conditioners (mask) and protein conditioners (mask). Now, you've told us that your hair is dry and relaxed, so you'll probably want to select a conditioner that falls in the "hydrating conditioner" category.

I'm not brand loyal, and I'm not a brand spokesperson- and believe it or not, I don't have a "holy grail" hydrating conditioner. But a few of my favorites include:

- Wella's Hydro Mask
- Phyto's Phytokarite
- Rene Furterer's Karite
- Moroccanoil's Intense Hydrating Mask
- Kerastase's Masquintense

I'd suggest adding heat to these treatments, either cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded hair dryer, or cover your hair with a plastic cap and wrap it in a hot towel for 20-30 minutes. And of course, please always read and follow the manufacturer's directions on use! Also, consider adding a leave-in conditioner to your regimen, as well. I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how it's going! Love your hair.

This week's question comes from reader, nikhelw, who asked the following:

"So what can I do about these stubborn blackheads? I've had it!"

Well, lets first understand what exactly blackheads are! So blackheads, technically called "open comedones", are simply a build up of hardened oil and dead skin cells in a hair follicle. When the hair follicle is exposed to oxygen, it oxidizes and turns black- therefore the name "blackhead". Usually they're present on oily skin or skin types with an oily t-zone.

Here are a few ways to prevent them:

1. A consistent skincare regimen is key!
2. Use skincare products with noncomedogenic ingredients (will prevent pores from clogging).
3. Incorporate an exfoliant into your skincare regimen (will remove dead skin cells).
4. Incorporate a "clay-based" mask into your skincare regimen (will draw excess oil out of follicle).
5. Incorporate facials, by an esthetician, into your skincare regimen (the benefits are countless!).

And most importantly- again, a consistent skincare regimen is key! I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you choose to move forward, as well as what works for you. Love your skin.

This week's question comes from a follower on Twitter, who asked the following:

"What does the #HealthySexyBeautiful2010 hashtag mean? Why do you use it?"

I use the hashtag every time I tweet something related to the "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2010" challenge I started last year. I not only discuss external beauty on this blog, but internal beauty as well. I love educating you on the health of your hair, skin and nails and I want to be a source of motivation and encourage you to take care of yourself internally as well. And so the challenge was born!

I use the hashtag when I'm tweeting the things I'm doing daily to keep fit and healthy. I also try to post weekly updates on the blog. This was never a "weight-loss" challenge, but more of a "get fit" or "lifestyle change" challenge. If you lose weight, and that's your goal, then great.

And my disclaimer has always been that I am not a dietitian, nutritionist, or a medical doctor- so always seek the advice of your doctor! That's pretty much it. I plan to continue the challenge into 2011 and will be using the #HealthySexyBeautiful2011 hashtag, so please stay tuned!

This week's question comes from Habibah, who asked the following:

"What tips/advice would you give to stop nail biting?"

I really wish I had the perfect answer for you! Nail biting is a hard habit to break. You should try to first determine the reason for the nail biting - which might mean seeing a dermatologist. Also, keep in mind the germs/bacteria you're passing back and forth between your nails/fingers and your mouth and the potential of infection!

I asked my friend Shalon, who is a licensed esthetician and manicurist, to share her best tips for preventing nail biting:

- Try to get weekly manicures. Keeping your nails neat and groomed may prevent you from trying to "groom" them yourself.

- If weekly manicures aren't in your budget, keep your nails polished. Knowing that you will mess up your polish may keep you from biting your nails.

- Keep a cuticle cream or oil (Kiehl's Cuticle Cream or OPI's Cuticle Oil) in your purse. This will help with nail growth. Once you see growth, hopefully this will discourage you from biting your nails.

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how you choose to move forward, as well as what works for you. Love your nails.

This week's question comes from Kim (The Stylish Life), who asked the following:

"What are the best hair color brands and techniques for women that relax their hair? Can you relax and color during the same salon visit? I want something that lasts, but not a permanent dye job. And definitely something that won't dry my hair out. Thanks."

First and foremost, if your hair is strong enough to withstand two chemical services, then make it a priority to see a stylist who is highly skilled and knowledgeable. Also, because your hair will be chemically processed twice, you should consider using a mild relaxer.

Now, it is possible to relax and color your hair during the same salon visit, but only if you're using a semi-permanent haircolor. If you choose to relax, and must use permanent haircolor, then you should wait two weeks after relaxing before coloring your hair. And if you're doing it yourself, make sure you READ THE MANUFACTURER'S DIRECTIONS!

Permanent haircolor is the longest-lasting haircolor. It only needs to be reapplied once your new growth starts to show at your roots. Semi-permanent haircolor partially penetrates the hair shaft and slowly fades with shampooing. It will usually only last for about 6-8 shampoos. And demi-permanent haircolor, which actually does penetrate the hair shaft, lasts a little longer than semi-permanent haircolor, but it will also eventually fade over time with multiple shampoos.

It's also important to remember that if you choose to relax color-treated hair, you really need to make sure you're following a consistent haircare regimen. Incorporate both deep conditioning and protein treatments. Also, limit thermal styling, which includes the use of curling irons, flat irons and blow dryers.

Lastly, every stylist has a "favorite" haircolor brand and will hopefully use what's appropriate based on their client's haircare needs. I hope this helps! Please stop back by and let us know how you choose to move forward, as well as what works for you. Love your hair.

This week's question comes from Naomi, who asked the following:

"I am 41 and noticing a major change in my skin, especially under and around the eyes. I work long hours and travel for work pretty frequently. Can you recommend some steps I could take and a good line of all natural products for fighting wrinkles and dark, puffy eyes? Thank you!"

First and foremost, I'd recommend adopting a consistent skincare regimen. Here are ten easy steps:

1. Cleanse morning & night (never go to bed without removing makeup and cleansing your face!)

2. Tone after cleansing (both morning & night)

3. Use a moisturizer with a minimum of SPF 15 during the day! (90% of aging is caused by UV rays; UVB rays burn the skin and UVA rays age the skin!)

4. Use a night cream with antioxidants before bed

5. Use an eye cream both morning and night under your moisturizer (this is a preventive measure; signs of aging show first around the eyes, forehead, mouth, neck and hands)

6. Exfoliate 2x a week (helps with cell turnover and with the penetration of product ingredients into the skin)

7. Use a mask 2x a week (many, many benefits!)

8. Take a multi-vitamin daily and drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water daily

9. Eat fresh green vegetables at least 3x a week

10. Make sure you're getting adequate sleep!

I can't stress enough the importance of sleep! So, I'll say it again- make sure you're getting adequate sleep. Lastly, I'd like to encourage you to consider adding monthly facials to your skincare regimen. Not only are facials relaxing and pampering, but they assist with cell renewal, detoxification and the correction of existing skin conditions - plus much more! And, to answer your question regarding suggested natural skincare lines - here are a few you should consider:

- Baborganic
- Juice Beauty
- Dr. Hauschka
- Jurlique
- Weleda
- REN
- Caudalie

I hope this helps. Please stop back by and let us know how it's going for you! And as always, please feel free to send me any additional questions you might have. Love your skin.
