Mischo Beauty Challenge Update: "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011"

October is breast cancer awareness month. As the granddaughter of a breast cancer survivor, I am forever grateful for the saving grace of early detection.

My grandmother is many things: feisty, smart as a whip, witty as all get out, quite free with her tongue, gorgeous at any age and a fighter to her core. She has beaten back breast cancer, twice. A stickler for healthy eating and body maintenance, she has always been very good about annual doctor appointments and physicals. It was during one of those visits, about four years ago, that an abnormal mammogram exposed early stage breast cancer.

Being a septuagenarian, she assessed her options carefully and made a treatment decision that was right for her and the cancer was removed. During a checkup, almost two years later, a different instance of breast cancer, in the same breast, was found, again in an early stage. This time she opted to undergo chemotherapy. The road has definitely not been easy, but she is still here, kicking hard. If you asked, she would tell you that early detection was the key to her second and third chances at life.

The numbers are not heartening: 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during her lifetime, and out of those women, a whopping 85% will have no family history of the disease. It is highly likely that each of us knows and loves at least one woman who has or has had the disease.

What do these statistics mean for us? That preventive care - via healthy lifestyle choices, self-exams, and consistent and on-time screenings (as per guidelines outlined by your doctor) - can mean the difference between surviving and succumbing. Please visit the American Cancer Society for more information on early detection and prevention, and stand up for your life. -Zee

Mischo Beauty Pick: Sean John Unforgivable Woman

I just learned that Sean John Fragrances support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and will make a donation of $10,000 from the combined sales of the Unforgivable Eau de Toilette Spray and Unforgiveable Woman Eau de Toilette Spray. I recently had the opportunity to try Unforgivable Woman for the first time and I must tell you that I'm pleasantly surprised! It's light, fresh and has a sweetness to it that makes the scent very pleasing. It's a blend of orange flower, grapefruit, cyclamen, violet, coco de mar and iris and it's definitely worth checking out!

As you all know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I'd like to share with you information on the Young Survival Coalition. It's an international, nonprofit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the concerns and issues that are unique to young women and breast cancer. Through action, advocacy and awareness, the YSC seeks to educate the medical, research, breast cancer and legislative communities and to persuade them to address breast cancer in women 40 and under. Mischo Beauty: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As you all know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and when I found out that Orbit (by now you all know how much I love Orbit from seeing my various NOTD posts!) had partnered with Bright Pink- I had to spread the word!

Bright Pink's mission statement is "Be Brilliant. Be Bold. Be Bright Pink" and it is a national organization dedicated to providing support to young women who are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. It believes in the beauty and strength of women and exists to enlighten and empower high risk individuals to take control of their breast and ovarian health by providing education, support and a sense of community for a better, brighter future.

So during October, in support of their partnership with Bright Pink and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Orbit White Bubblemint is offering two speical edition packs, a 12-count flat pack and a 60-count Big-E-Pak. When you purchase either pack, ten percent of the purchase price will be donated to Bright Pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.

For more information on both breast and ovarian cancer, please visit www.bebrightpink.org

Mischo Beauty Pick: Evian Brumisateur Facial Spray

My schedule has been jammed packed as of late- in addition to my working to complete 150 miles to raise awareness and funding for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So, for a "pick-me-up" throughout the day, I've been using Evian's Brumisateur Facial Spray.

It's mineral water from the French Alps that's full of nourishing minerals such as calcium, magnesium and silica. I spray it lightly on my face and neck and my skin feels refreshed and instantly hydrated. I love the fact that it has multiple uses- for example you can use it when cooling off after the gym, setting makeup and of course- as a "pick-me-up" throughout the day.

Have you tried this yet?

Mischo Beauty: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As you all know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I'd like to share with you a few facts regarding the American Cancer Society's recommended screening guidelines for breast cancer:

1. Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.

2. A clinical breast exam should be part of a periodic health exam, about every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women age 40 and older.

3. Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care providers. A breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s.

For more information please visit the American Cancer Society.

P.S. Just a quick update- so far I've raised $185 toward my goal of $200! I'd love it if you would support me by making a donation here. Also, I've run 25.63 miles toward my goal of 150 miles for the month. You can track my progress on nikeplus.com and the challenge is called "Mischo Beauty Runs for a Cure". Thank you!

Mischo Beauty: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and two very special people in my life, who are breast cancer survivors, have inspired me to get involved and raise awareness. Here's what I plan to do:

TotalBeauty.com's "Total Beauty, Total Cure Campaign": Over the course of the month I will be posting educational information on breast cancer and I will host a giveaway on October 29th.

The Beauty Blog Network's "Comments 4 A Cure": My goal is to raise $1 per comment left on my blog during October 14th - 16th.

Mischo Beauty runs on nikeplus.com: I've created a public challenge called "Mischo Beauty Runs for a Cure" (please feel free to join!) on nikeplus.com and my goal is to run 150 miles (4.84 miles a day) during the month of October and raise $1 for each mile I run. Wow.

As you can see, my goal is to raise $200 which will be given to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Please join me in raising money for a cure by making your donation using the ChipIn widget on the right sidebar. Or you may donate through PayPal by using this email address: mischobeauty@gmail.com. Thank you.
