Mischo Beauty Challenge Update: "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011"

October is breast cancer awareness month. As the granddaughter of a breast cancer survivor, I am forever grateful for the saving grace of early detection.

My grandmother is many things: feisty, smart as a whip, witty as all get out, quite free with her tongue, gorgeous at any age and a fighter to her core. She has beaten back breast cancer, twice. A stickler for healthy eating and body maintenance, she has always been very good about annual doctor appointments and physicals. It was during one of those visits, about four years ago, that an abnormal mammogram exposed early stage breast cancer.

Being a septuagenarian, she assessed her options carefully and made a treatment decision that was right for her and the cancer was removed. During a checkup, almost two years later, a different instance of breast cancer, in the same breast, was found, again in an early stage. This time she opted to undergo chemotherapy. The road has definitely not been easy, but she is still here, kicking hard. If you asked, she would tell you that early detection was the key to her second and third chances at life.

The numbers are not heartening: 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during her lifetime, and out of those women, a whopping 85% will have no family history of the disease. It is highly likely that each of us knows and loves at least one woman who has or has had the disease.

What do these statistics mean for us? That preventive care - via healthy lifestyle choices, self-exams, and consistent and on-time screenings (as per guidelines outlined by your doctor) - can mean the difference between surviving and succumbing. Please visit the American Cancer Society for more information on early detection and prevention, and stand up for your life. -Zee

Mischo Beauty Challenge Update: "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011"

So as you all know by now I kinda, well sort of, fell off of the "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011" challenge. I had the very best intentions, but circumstances out of my control dictated otherwise. You see, a few months ago, I found out I was blessed with a little bundle of joy (as you can see in the photo above of my friend Shalon and myself) and I realized that I was no longer in control of my eating habits (no morning sickness - thank God!) and energy levels (experienced extreme fatigue) for the first few months.

And yes, it's the reason for the break away from blogging.

So to quickly update you - my eating habits have returned to almost normal, my energy levels are pretty much back on track (given the circumstances) and thank God for prenatal yoga (a life saver) classes twice a week! I'm still using my pedometer (just walking) and trying to get in as many steps as I can daily - and believe it or not, drinking 96 oz of water (has to be ice cold!) daily is a breeze - I pretty much crave it!

Now that you're all caught up with me - it's your turn! Have you been keeping up with the challenge?

I have this tiny confession to make, well it's actually a big deal and I'm embarrassed. You see I have this slight addiction to Diet Coke (booooooo!) and I'm determined to get over it. It's a bad addiction, believe me, I know! And with as much water as I drink, you'd think it would be the last thing that I reached for, but it's not. So in an effort to get over it and move on, I've been drinking Perrier. You get the carbonation and fizz, without the rest of the bad stuff. Give me thirty days - I'm determined to win!

These little Emergen-C packets have been little lifesavers for me as of late. Just when I think I'm cold-free/flu-fee I begin to feel a little something coming on and I immediately- without hesitation- reach for these! They work - so much so I've been buying them by the box. On another note, has anyone tried the "Bobble" - the water bottle with a built in filter? Also, does anyone own any Tracy Anderson DVD's? Would love to know your thoughts! Finally, I'd like to encourage you to make a donation to the American Red Cross in support of the disaster relief efforts to help those in Japan and throughout the Pacific.

I have to let you all in on a little secret. When I don't have fruits, vegetables or nuts readily available to snack on during the day (well, when I'm at work), I love snacking on Cheerios. How old am I, again? LOL. Sometimes I'll eat them dry, or add milk and a banana. Either way, they're good and usually hit the spot without leaving me feeling guilty. What about you? What are your favorite snack foods?

This is my weekly check-in to find out how you all are doing! Three months into the new year, and yes, it gets rough around this time. Oh, and let's not talk about the cold weather we've had on the east coast! It makes you want to seriously stay in and hibernate. I'll have to admit that I've been bored with my food choices as of late (like the salads - pictured above- I have for lunch everyday). So, I've got to get creative and plan ahead to allow more variety when it comes to my food choices. Also, March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and I want to encourage you to take a look at the link and pass it on!

I'm happy to be back to my regular posting schedule (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is over!) and so I'm presenting another option to you when it comes to choosing a "hair, skin & nails" supplement. I'm asked all the time which is the best, and it really depends on so many factors. I thought you should know about Solgar's 100% vegetarian friendly Skin, Nails & Hair supplement. On another note, many of you know that I'm a Red Cross blood donor and I want to encourage you to become one as well. Check out the "Top 10 Reasons To Give Blood" and send it on to a friend!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you know my first tweet of the day- everyday- is "10,000 step goal today + 96 oz H20 #HealthySexyBeautiful2011" - because inner beauty determines outer beauty, right? Yes, I stress the importance of daily water intake. So, when I was asked to try Icelandic Glacial water, I naturally welcomed the opportunity!

I was impressed by the fact that there's no human contact with the water until the bottle is opened for drinking - and because of it's "exceptional purity and optimal mineral balance", Dior is now formulating products using the water. But, when the bottles arrived for my review, I felt bad. Yes, I think the water is great- and yes, I do recycle. But, I'm really doing my best to use my water bottle and drink filtered water. So, the choice is up to you.

On another note , February is American Heart Month and sadly, 1 in 4 women die of heart disease. Please read this and send it to a friend!

This is my weekly check-in, and I have a few goodies I'd like to share. First, the green powder pictured above is spirulina, and a friend suggested that I add it to my green smoothies. I haven't yet though, because it's been too cold for smoothies this week! Also, I had an opportunity to try EBOOST - and while I love the concept, I'm not a fan of the taste. I've also tried Sparking ICE and loved the Black Raspberry flavor! It's free of caffeine and calories, but does contain Splenda. And lastly, check out WebMD's "Taking 10,000 Steps a Day May Lower Diabetes Risk"... have you purchased a pedometer yet?

So this is my weekly check-in! I wanted to quickly mention the Rene Furterer dietary supplements (for hereditary and sudden/temporary hair loss) shown above. I'm not one to really advocate the use of supplements over a proper diet (as discussed here), but I do understand the need at times. There are circumstances that warrant the use of them. Also, I loved Cooking Light's "12 Ways to Eat More Vegetables and Fruit"... be sure to check it out and let me know your thoughts!

As promised, I'm checking in! And, as you can see, I'm eating a salad of fresh greens and other vegetables for lunch today- actually I try to do it daily, though I'll admit, it gets boring. But, I'm still challenging myself to fresh green vegetables at least 3x a week - not including the Glowing Green Smoothies I make some mornings. How goes it for you?

Just in case you missed it, my "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011" post is up and the challenge is on! And with that said, this photo has officially been added to my vision board. Why? Because firm and toned legs are a must for 2011! Don't you agree?

Mischo Beauty Challenge Update: "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011"

I hope you all have been able to check out the "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011" post by now and have started - or I should say- are continuing on with making healthy changes to your lifestyle. Remember, inner beauty determines outer beauty (as I've said a million times before)!

With that said, I'm happy to present an alternative to the 8 glasses of water we all should really drink daily, and it's Hint Water. It's free of preservatives, sweetners and calories. I mean, it really is just water, but with a "hint" and just a tiny hint (in my opinion) of flavor. I can smell the flavor more than taste it. So for those of you struggling with water, give these a try and let me know what you think!

Mischo Beauty Challenge: "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011"

I love when Oprah says "when you know better, you do better" (a Maya Angelou quote), and so with the success of last year's "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2010" challenge we all have to agree that we now definitely know better! It's my goal to continue to be a source of motivation and encouragement when it comes to taking care of yourself internally (internal beauty determines outer beauty!) and so I'm continuing on with "A Healthy, Sexy & Beautiful 2011".

As before, I'll provide weekly tips on health, wellness and exercise. Ultimately, each of us will do what works best individually, based on our own needs. So here are a few items to get you started:

1. Invest in a pedometer and track your steps (so, so easy!). You'll be surprised at how you'll push yourself to get more steps in each day without even realizing it! 7,000-10,000 steps a day are recommended for overall good health.

2. Take a multivitamin daily, and drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water daily.

3. Eat fresh green vegetables at least 3x a week, and make sure you're getting adequate sleep!

4. Check out Kimberly Snyder's blog - it's filled with TONS of great tips and Kimberly is such an inspiration.

5. Yoga = JOY. Let me say that again, Yoga = JOY! If you haven't tried it, you are missing out. Consider joining the 21-day yoga challenge here.

6. I love Zee's "Firm Determination #10", and I plan to start working on that this week!

7. Enlist a partner (of course someone who shares the same goals) and hold each other accountable. That pretty much speaks for itself, right?

And just a reminder- this is not a "weight-loss" challenge, but it is an "inner beauty fitness" challenge. If you're fit internally, then there's no denying it externally! So if you lose weight, and that's your goal, then great. I am not a dietitian, nutritionist, or a medical doctor - so always seek the advice of your doctor!

I'll try to tweet the things I'm doing daily to keep fit and healthy by using the hashtag #HealthySexyBeautiful2011, so feel free to join me in sharing your updates by using it too! Oh, and if there are tips you feel I should add to this list, please leave them in the comments section and I'll be sure to add them.

Are you with me? I hope so! Let's get started!
