What are your thoughts on the Brazilian Blowout controversy?

You all know that my undergraduate degree is in Chemistry- and yes, I analyzed the chemical composition of "Lye" and " No-Lye" relaxers as a project for my Analytical Chemistry course. What we found was that the chemicals listed in the ingredients were definitely in the product! And yes, I got an "A"!

So when WWD broke the news about the Brazilian Blowout controversy, I had to know your thoughts! Just in case you haven't heard- "Brazilian Blowout" a professional hair smoothing treatment claimed to be formaldehyde-free, was exposed after an Oregon hairstylist, with the help of Oregon Health & Science University, found between 4.85 percent and 10.6 percent formaldehyde in samples. Not cool - at all!

Let me know your thoughts. Have you had the treatment? If so, how was the process and what were your results? Has your salon now pulled the treatment from their service menu? Do you rely on your hairstylist's product knowledge/expertise before considering a salon treatment? Or, do you do your own research?

I love Brazilian Blowout, both as a client and as a stylist. I have had it done 7 times in 2 years with no damage or negative affects. I have performed the service several hundred times in the same period.

It is important to note that Brazilian Blowout is not a relaxer, but rather a smoothing treatment which basically laminates the hair to eliminate frizz, and curl reduction is a side effect which can be enhanced or minimized based on how the process is performed.

Brazilian Blowout has a series of statements on their home page in response to the recent controversy, including a chemist's analysis of the tests and reports, indicating they may be inaccurate, as well as an independent lab's tests of air quality throughout the salon when several BB treatments were done throughout the course of a day.

I personally use a special air filtration system for maximum safety and comfort. Don't know if I'm allowed to post links here but you can read about it at Safer Brazilian dot com.

MischoBeauty! Thank you SO much for posting this. I have been trying to get around to posting about this topic on my blog. I haven't had the time to do the full research. I know about the controversy with the formaldehyde and also as a pre-med/biology major I am always intrigued about stuff like this. I think I read that this new silicone craze has something to do with it and supposedly helps to smooth and coat the hair. Anyway, I think you just inspired me to blog.
