I’ve recently received the same question with regards to how to go about achieving a great haircut. And, just last week, a friend of mine decided to have her hair cut at the little shop she goes to for eyebrow threading in Manhattan. She asked the stylist for a trim and then changed her mind and asked for a few layers. There was no consultation, no discussion of haircut photos and to top it off- there was a language barrier! Let's just say that she wasn't very pleased with the results, so this post is dedicated to her as well.
Every haircut is made up of a combination of basic techniques used to create varying shapes and effects on the hair. Before having your haircut, I recommend the following:
- Consultation with stylist (discuss face shape, hair texture and lifestyle)
- Review haircut/style photos with stylist
- Consider home maintenance requirements
- Be realistic
Taking the above into consideration will ensure that you and the stylist agree on the best direction and that the stylist has adequate information to achieve the desired end result.
Love your hair.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions! Oh, and I'd love to hear your haircut stories, so please share!

My bad cut happened to me when I was 12yrs old. First of all I had a jeri curl, I don't know what my mom was thinking. I am still scarred from the jokes. But the haircut the stylist gave me was this space ship uneven wanna be bob. I still have nightmares. lol.
I love her cut and color. I want color so bad now that the weather is warming up. But I am afraid of dryness.
Too funny! Yeah, I'd really love to rock a "pixie" cut- but I'd have to get my hair done every week to keep it up and I don't have time for that right now...
And color, you can definitely do it- just remember that you shouldn't go too "light" and you need a great conditioner - weekly!
I love her hair, it looks so feminine and soft. I have never done anything to my hair, but the worst haircut I ever had was definitely from my mom! =P
Yes, those photos are definitely one of Nicole's "better hair days"! Oh, and we've gotta love our mothers for trying! ;) LOL!
my bad hair experience was not too long ago when I went natural, when it was long enough to rollerset (still short like I have it now). I went to this salon by my job in midtown and explained to the lady that I just wanted a jagged style but too be careful because it was still short. She went crazy and cut it all off so short I couldn't even pick it up to blow dry. I could've had a bob by now. My stylist now doesn't even want me to trim my hair yet..lol I'll need it soon.
To "missbianca": Thanks for sharing and hang in there with your hair! I know the "in-between" stages are hard...
