Mischo Beauty School: Exfoliation 101 (Part 2)

Who knew that over-exfoliation or too-much exfoliation could lead to premature aging? Well it's true! Just when you thought you were taking the necessary steps to ensure that you’re rid of all the oil, dirt, and debris that clog your pores - you learn that too-much can be damaging! Over-exfoliation can cause irritation/inflammation, and when our normal cellular functions have to work to combat this, the result is a break down in collagen, elastin and hydration. The end result is dry, wrinkled, sagging skin.

I must admit that I've been guilty of this and had to learn the hard way by having to deal with irritated skin. As an esthetician, my recommendation is to use an exfoliation product for your particular skin type, no more than 2-3 times a week. Always consult your esthetician or the manufacturer’s directions for correct product usage information. Also, remember that "less is more"!

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions! Love your skin.

You are so right Mischo! I have recently discovered that I can only exfoliate 2x in one week. Only on the weekend. If I do more, my skin feels like sandpaper. Great Post!

To "Luxe Tips": Thanks! Just use caution with exfoliating the skin on your face and pay attention to how your skin reacts!

To "Dominican Enigma": Good! It's so good for your skin as long as it's not too much...:)

To "antithesis": Well my suggestion is to exfoliate based on your skin type and needs! Pay attention to how your skin reacts. If you have dry or oily skin, then I'd probably do it twice a week. If your skin is normal and you have no issues- then once a week is probably enough. :)

To "MakeupByRenRen": Yes- that's what they taught us in esthetics school- of course I had to really learn that on my own! ;) LOL.

Hi there! :) How are you today?
Would you say that a gentle exfoliating scrub/wash is too much to use daily? Something like philosophy's micro-delivery wash, etc.? I also do a major scrub a few times a week, but now I'm worried that it's too much! Yikes. No bad reactions from my skin yet, but I don't want to harm it. :)

To "JennBee": I'm fine. Thanks for stopping by! :)

I think the answer to your question would be that it depends on your skin type/issues. I'm not familiar with Philosophy's Micro-Delivery Wash, so I wouldn't advise against what the manufacturer's directions state.

One of my favorite exfoliants is Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant
and here's the link to the post I wrote on it back in February:

It can be used daily- according to the manufacturers directions, but my preference is to use it only 2-3 times a week and this is totally based on my specific skin type/needs!

If you aren't experiencing any issues with your exfoliant, then I would continue with your skincare regimen. Your exfoliant is probably gentle enough for daily use.

If in doubt I would seek the advice of a Dermatologist.
