Mischo Beauty: ARROJO Education Needs Hair Models

I'm sharing this with you because I know how hard it can be to find hair models! This is perfect for those of you in need of a new look, or for those wanting to reinvent themselves for the upcoming new year:

"The ARROJO artistic team is making a new range of educational DVD's to teach our techniques, ideas, and inspirations to fellow hairdressers. Accordingly, we are looking for hair models willing to have their hair cut, color, and styled on camera.

We need male and female models between the ages of 18-26. You must be open to a new cut and/or color and you must be comfortable on camera. The cuts include classic styles like bobs, layers and graduation, cuts and colors based on the latest trends in modern hairstyling, and men's haircuts.

We will also be holding model calls on: Wednesday November 26th @ 10:30 AM -11:30 AM and Friday November 28 @ 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM. All potential models must be free to attend one of these casting dates. Filming days are Sunday November 30th to Thursday December 4th. You must be free on at least one of the days.

To apply, please send a short email including your preferred hairstyle (a classic bob, graduation or layer cut, a trend-focused cut and color, or a men's hair cut), the dates you'll be available, and a recent headshot to: adrian@arrojoeducation.com.

You may also include brief details of any modeling experience you may have. All models chosen receive $100 and an ARROJO product goody bag. Please be aware that due to the large amount of submissions we are only able to respond to eligible candidates."

Mischo Beauty School: Bikini Waxing 101

This lesson was inspired by the many questions I’ve received over the past few days regarding waxing, specifically bikini waxing. So first let's understand waxing. It's basically a form of epilation- removing hair by pulling it out of the hair follicle. Because hair is removed from the hair follicle, it takes longer to grow back- generally 4-6 weeks.

Below I’ve listed my best tips on how to prepare for waxing and what to expect:

1. Your hair should be at least a 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, if longer, prepare to have it trimmed by your esthetician.

2. Plan to wax after your menstrual cycle because your body will be less sensitive.

3. Lightly exfoliate a few days before waxing to remove dead skin cells and make hair easier to adhere to the wax.

4. A Brazilian bikini wax involves the removal of all hair, except for a “landing strip” in the front, but you may choose to have it all removed.

5. Your esthetician will tweeze stray hairs.

6. It may take 24 hours for any redness or soreness to disappear. During that time, avoid the sun, exfoliation, cream irritants and excessive heat.

7. Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol and aspirin before waxing as these heighten sensitivity.

8. If the wax pot is dirty and has old wax on it and a spatula sitting in the wax- RUN! There may be sanitation issues.

9. If your esthetician “double-dips” the spatula in the wax pot each time wax is applied to the area to be waxed- RUN! There are definitely sanitation issues.

10. Do not wax if you use Accutane, Retin-A, are sunburned, using other topical AHA's, or medications that will make your skin reactive to waxing.

11. Do not wax if you have diabetes. You are more vulnerable to infection.

12. You must wax consistently every 4 - 6 weeks for the first few times. This will give your hair time to begin growing on the same hair cycle. Don’t shave in between waxing appointments.

13. Resume exfoliation about 3 days after waxing to ensure the removal of dead skin cells, which, if not removed, could cause the hair to grow inward resulting in ingrown hairs.

Love your skin. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Mischo Beauty Extra: Dior Vernis "Black Sequins" Nail Polish

This week's nail polish pick was inspired by Sasha Fierce, herself - and should definitely be a part of your nail polish collection. The color is hot!

"Black Sequins gives nails a celestial shimmer. The raven black lacquer contains silver flecks that make your nails look like a starry night- they glitter."

I'd love to know your thoughts! Oh, and by the way, I included my favorite lip gloss of the moment in the last photo- it's Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect #317, and it's amazing!

Beautiful hair needs an expert: Silk Pillowcase

My recommendation this week is simple- invest in a silk pillowcase. With the arrival of winter, you might find yourself challenged with unusually dry hair. One way to prevent this problem is to use a silk pillowcase.

Certain fabrics, such as cotton, deplete the hair of moisture and cause friction on the hair's cuticle (outermost layer of hair), leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Not only will a silk pillowcase keep your hair soft and smooth, but it feels so good on your skin! I'm recommending that Beyonce add this to her packing list as she travels around the world promoting her new album.

Mischo Beauty Loves "Sex and the City" The Movie Book

I love, love, loved the movie and I love, love, love this book! As soon as I reviewed Betty Beauty, I automatically thought about the episode where Samantha took matters into her own hands after discovering gray in her "hair down there". And the result- well not exactly what she'd hoped for!

Anyway, the "Sex and the City" movie book is definitely a must-have and includes behind-the-scenes stories from the cast and crew, a guide to the FABULOUS wardrobe and a tour of the movie's multiple locations. And yes, with me being a hairstylist, I couldn't wait to find out if Sarah Jessica Parker wore a wig or had her hair dyed for the scenes shot after Carrie and Big's break-up. Well, the book tells all, and you'll have to check it out yourself to find out the answer!

Mischo Beauty Pick: Betty Beauty

By now you all know that I'm a licensed esthetician and so working with the hair "down there" is nothing new to me. I've done my fair share of bikini waxing techniques- American, French, Brazilian and Japanese, as well as shapes and designs upon request. But one service I haven't performed is dying the hair "down there", and only because I'm not licensed to do it in a spa.

Remember the episode of "Sex and the City" when Samantha attempted to dye her hair "down there" and the result was far from what she'd hoped? Well for those of you who are curious like me, you'll be excited to learn that a company called Betty Beauty has specifically formulated dye for the hair "down there" and you can do it yourself at home! The kit comes in a variety of colors - brown, black, blonde, auburn and pink (which is called "Fun Betty" and is the biggest seller!). For more information visit Betty Beauty.

Is your Betty ready?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Crabtree & Evelyn's New India Hicks Island Night Collection

Recently I learned that India Hicks, host of Top Design, has partnered with Crabtree & Evelyn to create a fragrance collection called India Hicks Island Night. She lives on an island in the Bahamas and so it was natural for her to draw inspiration from her surroundings. The collection's fragrance is a blend of orchids, night-blooming flowers, orange blossom, green island palms and a woody musk.

My favorites from this collection include the Scented Candle, Eau de Toilette and the Rich Body Cream. The collection also includes an Evening Fragrance Compact with Enhancer, Creamy Body Wash, Milky Bath, Smooth Body Lotion, and a Fragrance Diffuser. The India Hicks' Island Night collection is free of parabens, mineral oil, sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate, propylene glycol and colorants.

Did you watch Top Design? Have you tried this collection yet?

Mischo Beauty Pick: The Brow Collection Brow Tamer

My eyebrows are a serious matter and you'll hardly ever catch me leaving home without them! I'm a licensed esthetician and I've spent many hours learning to tweeze and wax eyebrows by doing my own. Well I wish this product was around when I started doing my own brows, but I'm happy to have discovered it now. The Brow Tamer, which is part of The Brow Collection by celebrity makeup artist Elke Von Freudenberg, is a very light pomade used to condition, shape and keep brows in place. It's perfect for those of you who have brows with minds of their own!

Beautiful hair needs an expert: L'Oreal Vive Pro Color Vive Shampoo

I'm sure most of you have seen Beyonce's new L'Oreal Paris Feria commercial and it's quite evident that her hair is colored using Feria's permanent haircolor formula, which would lighten her natural brunette color to the "Golden Sunset" or is it the "Sunflower Blonde" we're so used to seeing. With her hectic schedule of appearances, her hair is probably touched up every 3-4 weeks in order to keep her haircolor flawless, as I'm sure is what's expected of a L'Oreal Spokesmodel. With that in mind, we must remember that haircolor is a chemical service that can take it's toll on your hair if not properly treated.

This week I'm suggesting a product from the L'Oreal Paris family to care for Beyonce's hair and it's L'Oreal's Vive Pro Color Vive Shampoo for dry, color treated hair. It's a hydrating shampoo that seals the hair's cuticle, which locks in haircolor and prevents fading. It cleanses the hair gently, and leaves the hair soft and smooth- and it contains antioxidants and UV filters which protect that hair from the environment and again ensures longer lasting haircolor.

What are you using to protect your haircolor?

Mischo Beauty Pick: Jurlique Lavender Hydrating Mist & Skin Balancing Face Oil

A few months ago, I was given the opportunity to try Jurlique's new Biodynamic Beauty Range, which consists of a serum, eye cream, night lotion and refining treatment. You all know how much I love skincare, and so I was more than excited about this opportunity. Well most recently, I've been using Jurlique's Lavender Hydrating Mist and Skin Balancing Face Oil. The Lavender Hydrating Mist is rich in lavender and marshmallow and works to hydrate and refresh dry, tired skin. The scent is soft, soothing- actually very relaxing.

The Skin Balancing Face Oil is formulated with avocado, macadamia and rose hip and works to guard against the loss of moisture and elasticity, which means it keeps the skin hydrated and firm. My preference has been to use this at night before applying my moisturizer. It's been a perfect addition for me, due to the fact that I normally need to make modifications to my skincare regimen with the change of seasons. During the winter months, my skin is usually dry and dehydrated, and this is an excellent addition to my skincare regimen.

Have you tried Jurlique products?

Mischo Beauty Extra: "Haute Chocolat" by CHANEL

I never thought I would ever own so many bottles of chocolate nail polish! Who knew? Well, what I do know is that there are so many chic shades to choose from, that at the rate I'm going, I'm sure I'll own them all before the end of winter. This week I bring you Chanel's Haute Chocolat. It's a "chic, shimmering chocolate brown with opulent flecks of gold". It's part of Chanel's holiday collection and it's limited, so more than likely, you won't find it after the holidays.

The texture and color are perfect- and two coats are all you need. I have little to no issues with chipping, as long as I use both a base and top coat. By the way, it's hard to see the "flecks of gold" in my pictures- but believe me, they're there and they look good! I also picked up my old-school favorite, Chanel's Vamp. If you knew me when this came out, then you already know I wore it ALL the time!

I have two words for Chanel's Haute Chocolat- "I DIE!". What do you think?
